Depression can be the most overwhelming thing in the world. This is something that is more common than you think.  While no two people will suffer depression in the exact same way, you ARE not alone and there are people who do care. Here are 6 ways to over come depression.

  1. Seek out help

This can be very helpful not matter if you seek out professional help or have that awesome friend who always have your back. There is no need to feel ashamed to go to a doctor or get advice from your friends. The simple act of having someone just listen, help you process your feelings and give you alternative points of view can be so helpful. Other doctors can give you prescriptions that can ease your depression symptoms until you are over the hump.

2. Workout

I know this is so daunting and the last thing you want do when you are depressed but you still should attempt it.   It doesn’t matter if you do yoga, run, swim, play football or lift weights.  Exercise releases many hormones and will buffer the symptoms of depression. Some studies have implied that exercise will relieve and even shorten the length of your depression. They don’t know if there is a causal link or just simple correlation- regardless you should try to work out.

3. Make plans

Continue to make plans in your life.  Give yourself something to look forward to. Whether it’s a grand vacation, a night out with friends or simply getting a haircut.  You can cancel if you aren’t up to it on that day. True friends don’t care if you cancel last minute.  The important thing is to make sure you that are trying to do things and give yourself something amazing to look forward to.

4. Do things that you enjoy

While depression can take the enjoyment out of your favorite past times, you shouldn’t avoid them. Instead continue to do it even if it makes you feel “meh”.  Try something that you haven’t done in a while like watch some of your favorite TV show that you haven’t seen in years.

5. Turn off social media

Social media tends to make everything worse when you have depression. So shut it off for a few days or weeks at a time.  This serves a few purposes: it saves you from needless drama of others, the feeling of isolation when you don’t get enough views/likes/comments and get away from cyber-bullying.  You should like yourself first before you seek outside approval.

6. Last quick tip- Sleep well

Make sure you sleep for about for 7-8 hours. You need it to relax your body but make sure you do not sleep too much nor too less because both of these can also start creating depression plan your sleep accordingly.
